The "China Sky Eye," also known as the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), has spotted a huge atomic gas structure in the vicinity of a galaxy group. The linear scale of the atomic hydrogen structure reaches some two million light-years, the largest one of its kind ever discovered in the universe.

中國科學(xué)院國家天文臺徐聰研究員領(lǐng)導的國際團隊，近日利用中國“天眼”FAST對著(zhù)名致密星系群“斯蒂芬五重星系”及周?chē)靺^的氫原子氣體進(jìn)行了成像觀(guān)測，發(fā)現了1個(gè)尺度大約為200萬(wàn)光年的巨大原子氣體結構，比我們所在的銀河系大20倍。該成果于北京時(shí)間2022年10月19日在國際學(xué)術(shù)期刊《自然》雜志發(fā)表。

觀(guān)測宇宙中的氣體是天體物理中一個(gè)非常重要的研究課題。宇宙中所有天體的起源都離不開(kāi)原子氣體，例如星系主要的演化過(guò)程就是不斷從宇宙空間吸收原子氣體然后將其轉化為恒星的過(guò)程。射電天文波段能夠對宇宙中的原子氣體進(jìn)行直接觀(guān)測。

FAST這項最新發(fā)現揭示了在遠離該星系群中心的外圍空間存在大尺度的低密度原子氣體結構。這些氣體結構的形成很可能與“斯蒂芬五重星系”早期形成時(shí)，星系間相互作用的歷史有關(guān)，已經(jīng)存在了大約十億年。這項發(fā)現對研究星系及其氣體在宇宙中的演化提出了挑戰，因為現有理論很難解釋為什么在如此漫長(cháng)的時(shí)間里，這些稀薄的原子氣體仍沒(méi)有被宇宙空間中的紫外背景輻射電離。FAST的這項觀(guān)測成果預示著(zhù)宇宙中可能存在更多這樣大尺度的低密度原子氣體結構。
