Before Stonehenge became a public property and a World Heritage site, it was briefly owned by an English millionaire named Cecil Chubb. In 1915, Chubb purchased Stonehenge and the land around it for ￡6,600 at auction. After Chubb purchased the monument, he said that it all happened on a "whim."
