Throughout history, women have almost always had to fight for privileges which men take for granted.

They fight for the right to vote, the right to gainful employment and even in the present day, there are countries where women aren’t allowed to drive cars!

Although women have come a long way since the early days, there’s still a lot to be achieved. The theme for this year’s International women’s day is “Be Bold for Change”.

Here are five things you should know about the International Women’s day.

1. It was originally referred to as the international working women’s day in remembrance of the strike of the International Ladies Garment Union.

1、國際婦女節最初被稱(chēng)為國際勞動(dòng)婦女節，這是為了紀念國際女裝工人工會(huì )的罷工。

2. The first ever international women’s day was held in February 28, 1908 in New York City and organized by the Socialist Party of America. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.

2、第一個(gè)國際婦女節于1908年2月28日在紐約市舉行，由美國社會(huì )勞工黨組織。1977年，聯(lián)合國大會(huì )邀請各成員國宣布3月8日為聯(lián)合國婦女權利和國際和平日。

3. International Women’s Day is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements – from the political to the social – while calling for gender equality.

4. It has been observed since the early 1900s and is now recognised each year on March 8. It is not affiliated with any one group, but brings together governments, women’s organisations, corporations and charities.

6. The original aim – to achieve full gender equality for women the world – has still not been realised. A gender pay gap persists across the globe and women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. Figures show that globally, women’s education, health and violence towards women is still worse than that of men. This is why do we still celebrate it?
